The Gambling World -Gambling Controversy
Gambling has gone through a metamorphosis since 1931, when it became legal in the State of Nevada. The gambling industry accumulates billions of dollars, while creating ample profits for various organizations and contributing enormous amounts of revenue to both state and federal governments. This provokes the question, as to whether or not gambling is for the betterment of the economy. Unregulated internet gambling create few jobs and have very little impact on the economy, but they tend to inspire people to play repeatedly. Regulated gambling, creates employment and builds revenue; for example, the benefit of having a casino near a poverty-stricken community helps to create a considerable number of direct and indirect jobs. This in turn will also stimulate economic growth by reducing unemployment and welfare recipients. Casinos provide jobs in areas of construction, equipment, staffing of hotels, restaurants and shopping centers. Furthermore, the emergence of riverboat casinos has created an urgent need for more riverboats, barges, shipbuilders and construction workers. By the same token, there is the debate as to if such claims are exaggerated, and that the social costs of gambling outweigh any benefits it may offer. Needless to say, there are mixed opinions as to whether gambling helps to stimulate the economy or is politically corrupt. Lotteries for example; are played by the disadvantaged, unemployed, undereducated, elderly, and minority groups far more than the upper class. Ironically, the money accumulated from the sale of lottery tickets, creates benefits of State projects and services that are geared toward the same people who pay money for lottery tickets.
